Aging of the skin results from two main factors: genetic programming and permanent actinic damage due to environmental stress (UV, detergents, mechanical shocks). Grape Seed and Pine Bark extracts containing proanthocyanidins which are more than 50 times more potent than vitamin E and 20 times more potent than vitamin C. Proanthocyanidins tend to affix themselves both on the inside and outside of cell membranes, especially the cells of blood vessels and connective tissues that are associated with skin and joints that contain collagen, protecting them from free radicals. Dr. Packer in The Antioxidant Miracle notes that pine bark extract also helps with the collagen and helps firm up tissue and reduce wrinkles.“Grape Seed Extract has an Anticancer Effect." Dr. Liviero L. Puglisi, from the Journal of Fitother (1994), pp. 203-9, regarding the antimutagenic activity of proanthocyanidins from Vitis vinifera said, “proanthocyanidins obtained from Vitis vinifera seeds were investigated in vitro for their antimutagenic effect. They resulted to be strong agents in counteracting spontaneous mutation, both at the mitochondrial and nuclear level of the cells. This effect, at least in part, is due to the antioxidant properties of proanthocyanidins and could be a rational basis for their potential use in chemo prevention of several pathological situations (i.e., cancer). Simply put, what this article demonstrates is that grape seed extract has an anticancer effect.
